Your actual job

Nine chapters of what you are not. Here is what is left, and it is deliberately small.

Be faithful. Show up, ask the questions, keep the group in the text, week after week, whoever is sitting there. Faithfulness is measured in weeks, not in outcomes.

Trust God. He calls people before they arrive and grows them after they leave. Behave as though that is true — most visibly by not panicking when nothing appears to be happening.

Obey. Go first. A facilitator who reports what they actually did about last week’s passage sets a standard no amount of encouragement can substitute for.

Keep it simple and reproducible. Everything you add — your explanation, your preparation, your presence as the one who makes it work — raises the bar for whoever leads next. The group has to be leadable by the person sitting beside you.

Why the small job is the freeing one

A facilitator holding all four of these can walk into a room containing a skeptic, a mocker, a woman who came for her mother, and one hungry reader, and be genuinely unbothered. Not because they are relaxed by temperament, but because none of the outcomes in that room are theirs to produce.

Taking the pressure off yourself is not lowering your standards. It is what frees you to lead with humility, empathy, and confidence in God’s power rather than in your own reading of the room.

The charge

Our job is not to weed out people, and not to make them grow. Our job is to be faithful, expose them to God’s Word, and obey what we hear. Do that long enough and you will watch God call people to Himself in front of you — including, often, the ones you had privately written off.

Ask God for empathy for the people who will come, patience with the ones who take years, and confidence in His power to draw them through His Word rather than through your skill.

Try it this week

Before your next meeting, say the three releases out loud — “I am not responsible for results, I am not the judge of motives, I am not the source of growth” — and then go and be faithful with whoever walks in.
