Prayer

Prayer does not change God’s mind. It changes me.

Jesus assumed His followers would pray. He said when you pray, not if. And then He warned that praying is not a matter of finding the right words or enough of them.

Scripture — Matthew 6:7–10 (OTB)

“And when you pray, do not use thoughtless repetition like the pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not imitate them: your Father is aware of your needs even before you ask Him. Pray in this way: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Let Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’”

Prayer is difficult, and it is worth saying why rather than pretending otherwise. Some of it is ordinary — we are busy and distracted. Some of it is not: we are in a spiritual fight, and discouraging you from praying is the cheapest possible win for the other side.

And some prayers are not answered the way we asked. Sometimes God says no, as He did to Jesus in the garden. Sometimes we are asking a question that has no answer in the shape we asked it. C.S. Lewis: “I pray because I can’t help myself… It doesn’t change God. It changes me.” That is not a consolation prize. It is what prayer is for.

A pattern you can hand to anyone. Jesus’ own prayer, in four moves:

1. Praise and thanks — who God is, and what He has already done.
2. Repent — name the sin, the thought, the attitude. Out loud.
3. Everyone else — neighbours, family, the people you know who are far from God. Write the names down; you will want to look back at what He did.
4. Yourself — last. Your own needs and wants.

Notice the order. Three moves come before you. That order is not decoration — it is the shape of a servant’s heart, practised until it is yours.

Pray through the four moves once this week — out loud, with one other person. Write down the names you prayed for in move three, and the date.
