Start where the harvest is

If you don’t have a building, a launch team, or a budget, you might feel like you are starting from nothing. You are not. You are starting exactly where Jesus started.

Jesus’ strategy was never broadcasting

When Jesus sent people out to a new town, He did not tell them to find the biggest crowd and speak to it. He told them to find one household — the “person of peace” — and stay there. Not because the crowd didn’t matter, but because the crowd was never the entry point. A prepared person was.

That changes what a church planter with nothing actually has. You may have no building and no team, but if you have one contact in the place God is sending you — a neighbor, a coworker, a cousin — you already hold what the New Testament actually used to start something.

Three things to look for

You are not looking for the friendliest person or the most respected one. You’re looking for three specific signs. First, they receive you — they open the door, they welcome the conversation, they don’t need convincing to let you in. Second, they are open — spiritually hungry, asking real questions, not performing politeness. Third, they open their network — almost immediately they connect you to their family, their friends, their street. The Samaritan woman at the well did all three within one conversation, and a town believed because of her.

Reputation doesn’t matter here. Neither the woman at the well nor the Philippian jailer was anyone’s model citizen. God’s preparation is the qualification, not their standing.

Stay. Don’t hop.

Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move from house to house. — Luke 10:7 (OTB)

This is the instruction most planters skip past, because staying feels slow and hopping feels productive. But concentration is the strategy, not a compromise on it. When you stay with the one person, their credibility with their own network becomes the doorway for everyone connected to them — a doorway you could never build yourself, no matter how good your program was.

The network scan

Here is the practical step. Take the people you already know in the place God has sent you — not strangers, the actual names already in your life — and write them down. Mark which ones show any of the three signs: receiving, openness, an open network. Then pray over that list by name, specifically, asking God to show you who He has already prepared.

You don’t need a crowd to do this. You need a piece of paper and the names you already have.

Stay with the one person God has already prepared. Concentration, not coverage.

Try it this week

List five people you already have real contact with in the place you’re planting. Beside each name, note honestly whether you’ve seen any of the three signs.

Then finish this sentence, with a name and a date:

I will pray by name for __________ this week, starting on __________, and ask God to show me if they are the one He has prepared.
