The five marks

“Look for the person God prepared” is useless advice until you know what you are looking at. Five marks show up again and again — in the passages, and in ordinary life.

Receptive

They are spiritually open. Not converted, not convinced — open. They ask a real question instead of changing the subject, and they do not flinch when God comes up.

Relationally connected

They know people, and people know them. When you picture them, you picture them surrounded. This is the mark most often overlooked, and it is the one that decides whether anything multiplies.

Trusted

Their word carries. When they say something is worth doing, others take it seriously.

Responsive to truth

This is the one that separates interest from readiness. Give them something small to act on and they act — they read the passage, they try the thing, they come back having done it. Curiosity discusses. Responsiveness obeys.

Reproducing

They tell people. Without being asked, without being trained, they pass on what they found — the way the Samaritan woman went straight back to her town.

Where you meet them

Not in a special category of person. Mothers at the school gate. The man who runs the shop on the corner. A teacher, a nurse, a foreman, a neighbour everyone stops to talk to. What they have in common is not a personality type; it is a doorway into a set of relationships you could not otherwise enter.

Reputation is not one of the marks

Notice who is missing from the list: the respectable, the religious, the impressive.

The woman at the well had a history her town gossiped about. The Philippian jailer was hours from taking his own life the night he opened his home. Neither was anyone’s first pick, and both opened a household.

So hold this loosely. You are not screening candidates against a standard. You are noticing what God has already done in someone — and God’s preparation, not their résumé, is the qualification. If you find yourself waiting for someone more suitable, you have probably already walked past the person.
