Day 6: He wept

Jesus grieved over His people before He cleared the house.

Here is the thing this week has been building to. Your disappointment with the church is not a sign that you are far from God. Indifferent people are not disappointed. The fact that you care enough to question, and feel it this deeply, means you may be closer to God than you think.

What you feel is a taste of what God feels. He feels it more deeply than you do, because He knows every heart, and you can only see the fruit. He wants the same thing you want: a people who actually love Him.

So you are in the right place. This season may be the first step of a recovery, not the end of your faith. Watch what Jesus feels in today’s passage, and then what He does.

An honest prayer

Pray this as it is, or in your own words.

Jesus, You wept over Your people. Let my disappointment become what Yours was: grief, love, and a longing for them to come back to God.

Luke 19:41-48 (OTB)

41As he drew near to Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42and said, “If you, even you, had known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build a barricade against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44They will bring you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognise the time of God’s visitation to you.” 45Upon entering the temple courts, Jesus began to drive out those who were selling, 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47Each day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the leaders among the people were seeking to kill him. 48Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people were hanging on his words.

Three questions

  1. What does this say about God?
  2. What does this say about people?
  3. If this is true, what would I do today?

Today, I will
