Day 32: Fields ready for harvest

A woman with a past tells her whole town, while the disciples worry about lunch.

This is the end of a long conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at a well. She arrived alone, at noon, carrying a lot of history. She leaves as the first person in John’s gospel to tell a whole town about Jesus.

Meanwhile His disciples, who had walked with Him for months, come back with lunch and miss what is happening.

Notice what the woman leaves behind, what she says to her town, and what Jesus tells His disciples about the fields. Then notice what the townspeople say at the very end.

An honest prayer

Pray this as it is, or in your own words.

Jesus, open my eyes. I have been worried about small things while the fields are ready. Let me tell someone what I have found in You.

John 4:27-42 (OTB)

27At that moment His disciples returned and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do You want?” or “Why are You talking with her?” 28The woman left her water jar and went back to the town, telling the people, 29“Come, see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Could this be the Messiah?” 30They left the town and made their way towards Him. 31Meanwhile His disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, please eat something.” 32But He responded to them, “I have food that you do not know about.” 33Upon hearing this, His disciples wondered among themselves, “Could someone have brought Him food?” 34“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of the One who sent Me and to complete His work. 35Do you not say, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ holds true. 38I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have benefited from their labour.” 39Many of the Samaritans from that town came to believe in Him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40So when the Samaritans came to Him, they urged Him to stay with them, and He remained for two days. 41And through His words, many more came to believe. 42They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Saviour of the world.”

Three questions

  1. What does this say about God?
  2. What does this say about people?
  3. If this is true, what would I do today?

Today, I will
