Day 22: The Helper

Jesus did not leave His people alone with a book. He sent the Spirit.

If a church-first faith left one gap, it was usually this one: the Holy Spirit. We heard that He lived in us. We were not sure what that meant on a Tuesday.

This week is about what the Spirit does in people who seek and obey God with intention. Not in theory. In real hearts, including yours.

In today’s passage Jesus tells His friends it is actually better for them that He goes away. Read it and look for why, and for the things He says the Spirit will do.

What you write stays in this browser. Nothing is sent to anyone.

An honest prayer

Pray this as it is, or in your own words.

Holy Spirit, I have not listened for You the way I should. Guide me into the truth today. I want to hear what You are saying.

John 16:7-15 (OTB)

7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgement: 9concerning sin, because they do not have faith in me; 10concerning righteousness, because I am returning to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11and concerning judgement, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12“I have much more to share with you, but you cannot bear it now. 13But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will disclose to you what is to come. 14He will glorify me because he will take from what is mine and will disclose it to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. This is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and will disclose it to you.

Three questions

  1. What does this say about God?
  2. What does this say about people?
  3. If this is true, what would I do today?

Today, I will
