Day 21: Talk it over

This week you read:

• Day 18, Luke 24:13-35: We had hoped
• Day 19, James 1:19-27: Doers, not just hearers
• Day 20, Nehemiah 8:1-12: The book found again

If you meet with a friend or a group

1. Recap the week. Take turns retelling one of the passages. Which one stayed with you, and why?
2. How is the reading going? Has anything shifted in how you read the Bible this week? What is hard about it?
3. Share one “I will”. What did you do because of what you read? What happened?
4. Faith comes by hearing. Where have you seen your faith grow, even a little? Where is it still thin?
5. Practise together. Pick one passage from this week and do it as a group: read it twice, retell it, ask the three questions, and each write an “I will”.
6. Pray together.

For whoever is leading: receive what people say about the church without defending it, and without piling on. Let the passage do the teaching rather than explaining it yourself. If someone’s answer drifts away from what the passage says, gently bring the group back by asking, “Where do you see that in the passage?” Two things to keep in mind every week. If someone describes something in their church that is not right, such as abuse, manipulation or false teaching, the counsel in this class to stay does not apply to them; encourage them to talk about it with someone they trust. And if someone has felt numb or hopeless for a long time, gently encourage them to get help beyond this group as well.
