Day 18: We had hoped

Two disappointed disciples, and the conversation that changed everything.

Today’s story might be the closest thing in the Bible to where you are right now.

Two of Jesus’s followers are walking away from Jerusalem. Everything they had hoped for has collapsed. They are not angry at God exactly. They are just deeply, quietly disappointed.

Jesus joins them, and they do not recognize Him. Watch what He does with them on the road, and what they say to each other afterward about their hearts. Then notice what they do next.

An honest prayer

Pray this as it is, or in your own words.

Jesus, I had hoped for so much, and I have been walking away with my head down. Walk with me. Open the Scriptures to me, and open my eyes.

Luke 24:13-35 (OTB)

13That same day, two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about all that had happened. 15While they were discussing these things, Jesus Himself approached and began walking with them; 16but their eyes were kept from recognising Him. 17He asked them, “What are these matters you are discussing as you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. 18One of them, named Cleopas, answered, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19“What things?” He asked. They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him. 21But we had hoped that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women among us amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23and did not find His body. They came saying they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. 24Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described, but they did not see Him.” 25He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into His glory?” 27And starting with Moses and all the Prophets, He clarified to them what was mentioned in all the Scriptures about Himself. 28As they approached the village to which they were going, He acted as if He were going farther. 29But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30While at the table with them, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to share it with them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognised Him, and He vanished from their sight. 32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and revealed the Scriptures to us?” 33They got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and those with them, assembled together 34and saying, “The Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35Then the two recounted what had happened on the way, and how He was recognised by them in the breaking of the bread.

Three questions

  1. What does this say about God?
  2. What does this say about people?
  3. If this is true, what would I do today?

Today, I will
