Day 11: He shows Himself

Jesus's own answer to the silence: love that obeys.

Yesterday may have stung. Here is the good news behind it: if part of the silence is the quiet no we have been saying to God, then it is the easiest kind of silence to end. You do not have to manufacture a feeling. You only have to say yes to the next thing He shows you.

In today’s passage Jesus is talking to His closest friends the night before He dies. One of them asks Him a question that sounds a lot like yours: why would You show Yourself to us and not to everyone? Look closely at how Jesus answers, and at the promise He makes about the Holy Spirit.

The rest of this class is built around exactly this: hearing His words, keeping them, and watching for Him.

An honest prayer

Pray this as it is, or in your own words.

Jesus, You promised to show Yourself to the one who keeps Your words. I want to know You, not just know about You. Help me obey what You say today.

John 14:15-24 (OTB)

15“For if you love me, you will obey my commands. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will provide you with another Helper, to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither perceives him nor recognises him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you alone without provision; I will come to you. 19In a little while, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will understand that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and reveal myself to them.” 22Then Judas (not Iscariot) said, “Lord, how is it that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. The words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Three questions

  1. What does this say about God?
  2. What does this say about people?
  3. If this is true, what would I do today?

Today, I will
