One community at a time, until the local church can carry it

Spark is running today, and it expands as funding allows — one community released at a time rather than a fixed slate announced in advance. Where it goes next depends on where a church, a mission team or a partner points us.

Spark starts with a real, felt need. A community's health is often the doorway: we send local Honduran medical professionals to run a brigade and a school health screening, addressing eyesight, growth, and basic wellness needs a community rarely gets the chance to have looked at. That single day of service opens a relationship, not a one-time transaction.

Out of that first encounter, we identify and train one or two community health promoters, ordinary people from that same community, in a blended program: in-person sessions, printed materials, and a certification that teaches basic health knowledge and, just as importantly, when to refer someone to an actual medical professional. Promoters aren't paid staff; the program covers their training, certification materials, and transportation only. What they get is standing, ongoing access to Clínica de Esperanza's own medical team, so the referral pathway they learn stays open long after we leave.

The strongest test of a health promoter's training happens inside the program itself, not after it: partway through, the promoter takes over leading the community's own health trainings, independently, while a CoMission-trained local trainer steps back. The same handoff happens on the discipleship side of the work. CoMission hosts one community gathering; the local church plans and runs the next one entirely on its own. By the time a community's program ends, the proof that it can continue isn't a promise; it already happened, twice, while we were still there to see it.

What outlasts the program is what actually decides whether it worked: a local church trained and equipped to keep making disciples and caring for its own people, at no further cost, run entirely by the volunteers who live there, alongside a certified health promoter who keeps training neighbors, spotting needs, and reaching back to the clinic when something is beyond what they can handle. Spark exists to make that handoff happen, community by community, wherever the need is real, and it starts again wherever a church, a mission team, or a partner points us to the next one.
